One of a bus driver's most difficult tasks is re-entering traffic from a bus stop. By yielding to buses, you can give our drivers a hand, enhance traffic flow, help buses stay on time, and make roads safer for everyone.
It's also the law. Washington State RCW 46.61.220 states, "The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right of way to a transit vehicle traveling in the same direction that has signaled and is re-entering the traffic flow."
What should I do when I see a merging bus?
Watch for the illuminated "Yield to Bus" light above a bus's left turn signal
Slow or stop to allow the bus to merge back into traffic
Safely change lanes if you no longer want to travel behind the bus
Do not attempt to change lanes quickly to overtake the bus
Do not speed up to keep the bus or other drivers from entering the lane
