Paying your fare with your Umo Card
As you step on the bus, you'll see the Umo Reader on the right hand side. To pay your fare, just place your Umo Card over the dark square on the reader. The green light means you're ready to ride!
Here's what it looks like:
Paying your fare with your Umo Mobile App
To pay your fare, step on the bus with your Umo Mobile App displaying a dynamic QR code. You'll find this QR code on the home page of your Mobile App.
As you step on the bus, you'll see the Umo Reader on the right hand side. Once your QR code is facing the reader, a video will appear on the reader screen. This video will help you guide your QR code into the target area. The green light means you're ready to ride!
Your screen will need to be fairly clean and free of major cracks.

Frequently Asked Questions About Umo
How does it work?
Your Umo card works a little like a debit account. You can store rides, passes or stored value on this account. Your Umo card or Mobile App is your key to that account. When you tap your card or smartphone on the card reader on the bus, it debits from your account.
What products can I store on my Umo Acount?
- Single-Ride Tickets (11 rides for $10)
- 31-Day Passes
- 92-Day Passes
- Day Passes
- Stored Value* with Fare Capping
*With stored value, you can add any amount of money to your account. This money can then be used to pay your fare, one trip at a time. Stored value never expires, and can be used on any fixed route bus (including Route 80x and routes in Skagit County). It can also be used on WTA’s Lynden Hop. If you are eligible for a Reduced Fare, the system will know this, and will charge you the appropriate fare. When you pay a fare using stored value, fare capping sets a “cap” or limit on the total amount you’ll pay, within a day ($3) or a calendar month ($30). Once you hit that limit, all rides are free until the end of that day or month. The cap is set at the price of our other passes. So for example if you pay $1 per trip for 30 trips between the first and 15th of a month (which adds up to $30), the rest of your trips that month are free. Fare capping happens automatically, whenever you’re using your Umo Card Mobile App.How Much Does it Cost?
The Umo Card costs $3. If you need to replace a lost card, it will cost $3. These cards are durable and can last up to five years. There is no cost for the Mobile App.
Can I protect my Umo Card against loss?
Yes. If you register your Umo Account, the unused balance of your pass or rides will be preserved, even if you lose your Umo Card. To replace a lost or damaged card, stop by the Customer Service Lobby at Bellingham Station. Replacement cards cost $3.
Are there other advantages to registering my Umo Card?
If you have registered your card, you can not only protect the value stored on your card, you can also set up your account to automatically charge you for a new pass before your current pass expires. Or you can sign up for an alert, to let you know when it’s time to purchase a new pass. If you’re paying with stored value, you can use your Umo card or Mobile App to pay for single rides anywhere in both Whatcom or Skagit County.
How do I register my Umo Card?Visit the Customer Service Lobby at Bellingham Station, or complete the simple process online. Note: you cannot register your card through the Mobile App.
Where can I reload my Umo Card?
- Your customer account online at Umopass.com
- Customer Service Booth inside the Bellingham Station Lobby.
- If you register your card, you can set it up to automatically reload passes or stored value.
How can I pay my fare using my smart phone?
Download the Umo Mobile App from the App Store or Google Play (just search for "Umo Mobility"). If you already have an Umo Card, you can convert your account to mobile using the app. Note that once you convert your Umo Account to mobile, you can no longer pay using your Umo Card. If you have ”Location” on in your phone, Umo will automatically know you want WTA as your home agency.
Will the Umo Reader accept anything other than an Umo Card or the Mobile App?
For the most part, no. The Umo readers cannot accept debit/or credit cards for payment. However, riders paying their fares with Student I.D. cards, Free on Fixed Route Cards, and paper tokens also pay on the Umo reader.
