Getting Started
How can I start a new vanpool?
Vanpools need to maintain an average of at least five riders per day. Since not everyone rides every day, you'll need seven or eight riders in the vanpool. A few must also be willing to drive. Vanpool drivers must have good driving records. We provide driver orientation and serve as your contact regarding van maintenance and other details.
Who makes the "rules" for each vanpool?
Each vanpool makes its own plan regarding driver schedule, how many riders they’ll accept, seat assignments, where they’ll meet and drop off, etc. Riders also agree on a backup plan in case drivers are unavailable, etc. We can help vanpools establish their internal plans. Riders also sign a vanpool agreement with WTA.
Do I need to commit to a vanpool for a specific period of time?
Yes. We ask for at least a six-month commitment.
What kind of vans are available?
We offer 12 and 15 passenger vans. Fares are the same regardless of the van's size.
What are the benefits of vanpooling?
Because the costs are shared, vanpooling is significantly less expensive than driving alone, especially for long commutes. In addition to the cost of fuel, passengers save the cost of maintenance, repairs and general wear and tear. Many vanpoolers find it less stressful than driving as well.
How can employers be involved in vanpools?
Employers can choose to help with employee's fares by offering a pre-tax payroll deduction. Employers can also choose to subsidize the fares. Many employers in our current program provide these types of support. Employers also have the option of helping to promote or coordinate the vanpools.
